Swapping a fan looks like a simple job, and sometimes it is. The part that decides whether it stays quiet and safe for years is the box and the bracket above the ceiling, which you cannot see once it is up.
What a proper fan install involves
A ceiling fan is heavy and it moves, so the electrical code requires it to hang from a box that is listed for fan support, not an ordinary light fixture box. Many fans that wobble, hum or work loose were hung from a box never meant to carry them. When we replace a light with a fan, checking and if needed replacing that box is part of the job.
Where there is no fixture at all, a fan needs a new circuit or a branch from an existing one, a fan-rated box and a wall control. We run the wiring through the attic wherever possible, so a new fan usually means one small opening in the ceiling rather than a trail of patched drywall.
Location matters too. A fan on a covered patio needs to be damp-rated, and one exposed to rain needs to be wet-rated. Indoor fans used outside rust and fail early, and in Houston summers a patio fan earns its keep.

Ceiling Fan Installation: common questions
Can you put a ceiling fan where there is only a light?
Usually yes. We check the box above the fixture and replace it with a fan-rated box if it is not one, then hang and wire the fan.
Can you install a fan where there is no fixture?
Yes. It means running a new supply from the attic to the new location, adding a fan-rated box and a wall switch or control.
My fan wobbles. Is that dangerous?
Some wobble is blade balance, which is easy to fix. A fan that moves at the mount or shifts when you touch it needs to be checked, because the box or bracket may not be rated for it.
Do I need a special fan for my patio?
Yes. Look for damp-rated for a covered patio and wet-rated if rain can reach it. We can recommend one when we quote the install.
